How has the experience influenced your life?
I can speak volumes about how my study abroad experience in 2014 has not only influenced my life but changed it dramatically. Frau Lillskau can attest that going into the exchange program I was already interested in the German language and culture. I got more out of the program than I expected - a profound fascination, appreciation and willingness to interact with other cultures around the world, so much that I even changed one of my majors. I become interested in TESOL Education, as it will help me achieve my dream to live abroad and teach English. This inspiration comes right out of my positive experiences abroad in Germany with Xperitas.
This is my goal and destination for my future, but an impact that has come about more concretely is my decision to study abroad this spring in Austria. I will be studying the German language and Austrian culture at Alpen-Adria University in Klagenfurt, and I will be gone an entire semester! To many this is a very daunting prospect, but it was a decision I made without batting an eyelash over; I knew living, studying and working abroad was something I always wanted to do. Furthermore, one of my professors at UNI has strong connections in Klagenfurt, and she has encouraged me to pursue graduate school in Austria. This is something I would have never considered, yet I have given it plenty of thought and consideration now. Xperitas has given me the confidence and tools to help me discover what I am passionate about and to follow these passions. It is a debt I pay back by encouraging any student I meet to travel abroad if they put forth any interest.
The German language and culture is a pillar of my identity. My German, though not as good as it was, is still there, and I still take advantage anytime I can to speak the language. I view the host family I stayed with in 2014 as members of my extended family, and I still keep in contact with them.
