The Washington D.C. Explorer is a 5-day educational travel experience designed for student groups seeking hands-on civic connection through history, governance, and shared discovery. This Washington, D.C. student travel program weaves together iconic monuments with immersive historical experiences, giving students a rich and layered understanding of American life.

The experience encourages students to actively engage with American heritage in real-world settings, from guided museum exploration and walking tours of colonial streets to interactive evening activities and illumination drives. Cultural learning is reinforced through daily interaction and lived experience rather than classroom-only instruction.

From the sacred grounds of Arlington and the legislative halls of Capitol Hill to the powerful galleries of the Smithsonian and National Archives, this Washington, D.C. immersion journey invites students to explore deeply, build civic awareness, and return home with a newfound appreciation for the stories that shape the Nation.

Price

  • $2,099 per student PLUS cost of flights*
  • For every six students the cost of one leader is included in the price.
  • For every enrolled student on your program, there is a $25 leader stipend to help leaders offset expenses while abroad.

*Travelers do not need to arrange their own air. Air travel is included in the program, but the cost will be added once the group air contract is confirmed. Price is valid for 2027.

About your Travel Coordinator

The role of the Travel Coordinator is as follows:

  • Provides explanation, historical information, and commentary
  • Supports the group getting to and from activities and sites
  • Manages logistics (transportation, schedule, tickets)
  • Serves as the primary on-the-ground support and problem-solver

What You’ll See & Do

Day 1 | Enroute to Washington D.C.
Upon arrival at a Washington, D.C. area airport, the group will meet their full-time tour guide and private motor coach to begin their educational program. The afternoon features a comprehensive, customizable monument tour including iconic sites around the Tidal Basin, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Afterward, travelers will head to Pennsylvania Avenue to stroll through historic Lafayette Park and capture photo opportunities outside the White House. The evening concludes with a sit-down dinner at a local restaurant, followed by a night visit to the National World War II Memorial before checking into a local hotel.

Day 2 | Washington, D.C.
The day begins with breakfast at the hotel before the group departs with their guide for a morning on Capitol Hill, starting with a guided tour of the historic United States Capitol building. After a voucher lunch at the Capitol Visitor Center Cafeteria, travelers will explore the richly ornamented Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress and view the exterior of the Supreme Court. The afternoon features a visit to the National Air and Space Museum to view historic aviation and space technology treasures. Following dinner at a local restaurant, the evening concludes with a stunning illuminated driving tour of Washington’s beautifully lit monuments and memorials before returning to the hotel.

Day 3 | Washington, D.C.
The day begins with a dedicated guide for a morning exploration of George Washington’s historic Mount Vernon estate. Following an included voucher lunch, the group travels to Arlington National Cemetery to witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (subject to timing and availability) and visits the iconic Marine Corps Memorial. The day wraps up with an included dinner and a fun group activity, ask your program manager about options for this, afterward the group returns to the hotel.

Day 4 | Washington, D.C.
The day begins with a visit to the historic Ford’s Theatre and discussion of Abraham Lincoln’s final hours as President, followed by lunch at the Hard Rock Café and time for souvenir shopping. In the afternoon, the group will view the original Charters of Freedom at the National Archives before paying a somber and moving visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. After a dinner included in Old Town Alexandria, the evening wraps up with a lantern-lit ghost tour led by 18th-century costumed guides through the historic city streets.

Day 5 | Return from Washington, D.C.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before checking out and boarding your coach to the airport for departure from our Nation’s Capital back to your home city.

Prices are based on a minimum group size of 35 students. If the minimum is not met and your group cannot be combined, a small-group supplement will apply. Final pricing is determined by confirmed dates, air arrangements, family stay communities, program components, group size, and number of leaders at final billing.
